Buy diamonds in New York

We love New York! As you will read in the VIP Diamonds New York section of this site we have Irish customers flying to New York every month to select and purchase diamonds.  Also, much of our high-end jewelry including the Fraser Diamonds Collection is hand-made in the US.  We have a US partner diamond corporation called Fraser Diamonds, Inc that makes all of this possible.  However, what about all these American websites that you now see when you search Google for anything from wedding bands to loose diamonds?  Of course, the simplest thing to say is that we cannot judge every site in the same way - some are better than others.  But what differentiates Diamond.ie from these pure online retails is that you get to meet us and see the diamonds first hand rather than receive your precious engagement ring in a Fed Ex box!

The famous 47th street in New York is another story all together.  It is a place where you might find the deal of the century but you are more likely to pay over the odds.  There are all too many stories of people returning home with a giant diamond and gloatingly taking it to Applebys or the like for an appraisal only to learn that it is clarity enhanced or worse.  It is great fun to visit though!  You will see more diamonds and fantastic jewelry than anywhere else on the planet.  Other things to beware of in the US are that Platinum and Gold tend to be of lesser grade than sold in Ireland and the UK.  We have our US made rings specially cast from "plum" 18k gold and 950 platinum as well as hallmarked inSheffield Assay Office.

There are a couple more pitfalls to internet shopping for jewelry from the US:

  • Ireland has a very interesting arrangement with customs in that all gold and platinum imported must be verified as being hallmarked.  In fact, if you tried to post a jewelry item into Ireland from the US the shipper would send it to the Assay Office in Dublin Castle.  Then if they test it and find that it is a fraction off, for example, 14k gold they might scrap the item!

  • You will have hefty import tax and duty fees to pay before you can receive your jewelry item.

  • You will need to have the jewellery independently appraised for insurance purposes and you could find it very hard to find a local jeweller that will accommodate you.

That was an introduction to buying from the US.  For more on Diamonds New York please contact us
