Fraser explains why online prices are lower than Irish jewellers

We have customers coming to us exasperated with the confusing choices and high prices that they see in Irish jewellers. They explain that they hear a different story about which diamond is best everywhere they go and that they don't understand why they see the same diamonds for sale at up to half the price on the internet.

Appleby - Irish Jewellers, Dublin

There are simple explanations for the price differences and conflicting stories:

Price differences

Did you know that Grafton Street has the highest retail rents, wait for it ... in the world? The most expensive retail rental prices are not in Paris, New York, Hong Kong or London ... but Dublin. When you buy in Dublin's city centre you are paying for this premium.

The mark up of diamonds in high-street shops is legendary. The famous Tiffany brand is rumoured to mark up some of its diamonds by 700%! Now imagine a website such as Diamond.ie with no shop, no rent, and little inventory, just expertise and great contacts! Do you see why we can sell premium diamonds at such reduced prices?

There is a point of realisation that many of our customers come to when they decide to buy a diamond from us: they realise that if they visit Irish jewellers and see a diamond that they love and want they have a choice - buy it from us for 25-50% less than the price on the label or pay the full price to the shop. If they choose to save their pennies then the same diamond that they saw in the shop will be with them within ten days, certified, valued and ready to show off to friends and family! The savings can then be spent on the wedding, an engagement holiday or even a new car (or maybe they can just be saved! ... how old fashioned of me).

Diamond choice and conflicting stories

We find that every couple has an ideal diamond specification. They may not know it at first, but once the basics are understood the perfect solution begins to take shape. It was that way with Emma and I when we got engaged in Milan - we had a budget and knew what size of diamond we wanted to find. We learned the rest by talking to the experts and soon had our perfect diamond defined by color, clarity and cut!

Most Irish jewellers have a limited selection and for this reason their commissioned staff will try their best to make their stock 'fit' what the customer is looking for and this may or may not be the ideal solution – that, in a nutshell, is why you will hear so many different explanations of which diamond is best for you.

With Diamond.ie, we impartially help you to work out the very best diamond for your taste and budget. It makes no difference to us if you prefer a 1.5 carat SI1 clarity, I color or a 0.7 carat Internally flawless, D color! What matters (in the example above) is if you prefer size or quality - both are great choices. What’s more we are qualified to advise you. There are only three qualified diamond graders in Ireland and if they own one of the Irish jewellers you might not even get to deal directly with him/her unless it is a very large purchase. More commonly, you will be advised by a trainee or someone whose knowledge is based on hearsay and out-of-date ideas which is another reason for all the different ideas you hear out there.

The bottom line is, if you want the best diamond and the best price then Diamond.ie is for you.
